Herbal witches and herbal medicine women have known how herbs and medicinal plants from the Black Forest can be used effectively since the Middle Ages. Franziska Kessler was one of them and her knowledge was already appreciated at that time around 1850. She and her husband Andreas were among the first liquorists to produce one of the Black Forest's first herbal liqueurs using their kirsch. Even Emperor Wilhelm I was familiar with this "Badische Caliber" and liked it very much.
The knowledge about the healing effect of Black Forest herbs was as widespread then as it is now. To mark the occasion of the 175-year-old distilling tradition on our farm (founded in 1844) we have recomposed the Badische Caliber using the following berries and herbs:
