Hibiscus flower

The tart hibiscus flower tea is drunk hot or cold and is a popular decaffeinated soft drink in Egypt and Sudan under the name Karkadeh.

Taste. The flavour of hibiscus is characterised by a high proportion of citric acid, malic acid and ascorbic acid.

Effect. Hibiscus is said to have a blood pressure-lowering effect. In African folk medicine, the tea is used as an antispasmodic and mild laxative.
